What We Do
When the National Alliance on Mental Illness was organized in 1979, state and local affiliates immediately began springing up across the country. NAMI Spokane was among the first, and by 1980 was promoting and providing mental health advocacy as a non-profit corporation with an office in downtown Spokane. For over 30 years we've been part of the nation's largest grassroots organization dedicated to helping people open their minds and learn that mental illnesses are biological brain disorders that can be successfully managed through medical treatment , family and community support.
The NAMI network joins all of it's members and friends as a voice of reason and ray of hope for those whose lives have been affected by severe mental illnesses. Our strength lies in wonderful volunteers who staff our office, teach our FREE courses, lead our FREE support groups, provide FREE community speakers, and represent us in the community. Our shared understanding based on personal experience allows us to gain empathy and an increased capacity for love by supporting our relatives, our friends, and each other.
