Volunteer: Schley Mountain Trail Improvement w/ Rocky Mountaineers

Learn more and register here.

Join us for our fourth year partnering with the Rocky Mountaineers on a trail improvement project. You do NOT have to be a member of the group to sign up, however, we can bet that you’ll want to be after a trip with these awesome folks! We are lucky to have such a hardworking group so passionate about maintaining trails. This year, we will be car camping from the Schley Mountain trailhead. There won’t be much hiking involved, but lots of hard work and views from Schley Mountain itself!

Trailhead: Schley Mountain #110, Ninemile RD, Lolo NF

Closest town: Lolo, MT

Itinerary:

Day 1 | Meet at the Schley Mountain trailhead at 0900 MST. The group will get camp set up and be briefed on the project at hand. We will begin working on clearing and repairing the trail. After a full day’s work, we’ll head back to the trailhead for a night of car camping.

Day 2 | Continue working to clear and brush the trail.

Day 3 | Continue working to clear and brush the trail. Day 4 | Finish up any work that needs to be done in the morning. Pack up camp and head out in the early afternoon.

Volunteer: Heart Lake Ambassador

Help protect Heart Lake and its charismatic goat herd!

The Heart Lake area in the Great Burn Proposed Wilderness is not only beautiful, but is easily accessible, making it a perfect destination for families or beginner hikers and backpackers. The Heart Lake area is also home to a native Mountain Goat herd. Goats are naturally curious and love salt, so they become habituated to humans when they are allowed to lick sweaty backpacks or eat human food. Over time, this behavior can create dangerous situations for the goats, pets, and humans. Recently, the Heart Lake goats have been getting a little too close to visitors in camp. Injuries or accidents between goats and humans can lead to trails being shut down or the removal of goats, and we want to avoid both of these!

Ambassadors will serve as a friendly, informative presence in the Heart, Pearl, and Dalton Lake area. Because this area has so many new to the area and new to camping visitors, ambassadors will provide useful information about wildlife (especially goats), camping at Heart Lake, trail access, safety and leave no trace practices to visitors in the area. Our goal is to have an ambassador at the lake every weekend in July and August. Staying at least one night is preferred, but please help out however long you can. Ambassadors will receive a free Great Burn shirt, hat, and water bottle!
