Volunteer: Do You Have a Passion for Senior Rights? Become a Long-Term Care Ombudsman!
The Washington State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is an essential link in our long-term care system that protects and promotes the Resident Rights guaranteed to long-term care residents under federal and state law and regulations. We are currently looking for volunteers who would be interested in serving as advocates for residents in nursing homes, adult family homes, and assisted living facilities that protect their rights and quality of life in these spaces on the ground.
Residents of long-term care facilities sometimes have little or no contact with the outside world. Many feel they lack control over their lives. A friendly volunteer who visits regularly can be a bright spot in an elderly resident's day. Many residents are alone and would be very happy to have your visits. This may also help ensure they get good care if someone from the community is looking in on them regularly.
Each volunteer in Washington State’s volunteer-based Ombudsman Program spends 4+ hours a week in nursing homes, adult family homes, or assisted living facilities working to resolve complaints while advocating for residents. Volunteers serve as advocates on the ground to help preserve the quality of life for residents in the region.
We are looking for volunteers that: Are 18+ years-old Have reliable transportation Have compassion, respect for older persons, and common sense Have a positive attitude and can communicate effectively
You will develop skills in: Communication Listening Relationship Building Confidentiality Complaint Resolution Resident’s Rights
If this sounds like an opportunity you would enjoy, we invite you to apply!

Volunteer: Backrs Virtual Mentoring: Unlock Opportunity in MinutesOnly 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that. Here's how: 1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores. 2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.) 3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support. 4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people. 5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. Volunteer: SAN Pantry Food CollectionSAN provides a weekly food pantry for our immunocompromised clients, people living with HIV & AIDS. On a weekly average, we server about 50 clients. We established this program last year after a hiatus and have not been able to get connected with 2nd Harvest due to the current crisis. We work with 2 local non-profits to source food items, but they are even having a hard time getting enough food for their own clients, let alone helping us. At this time, we really always need additional volunteers and access to foods, especially those rich in protein like eggs, chicken breast, oats, milk, greek yogurt, beans, peanut butter, and fresh fruit and vegetables. SAN does have a large chest freezer and access to multiple refrigerators and enough storage to be able to store items. If interested and able to donate food items, please let us know. We are able to take donations at our location with advanced notice since we are not always at the office. When the clock strikes noon on Saturday, April 26, hundreds of walkers and runners (and strollers!) are expected at Riverfront Park for Spokane’s 10th annual 5k Steps for Autism. The event caps off Autism Awareness Month and is being presented by Northwest Autism Center. Steps for Autism is a unique opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the lives and relationships of those touched by autism. This annual event promotes community inclusion and integration; healthcare providers walking alongside clients, teachers walking alongside students, and families walking alongside neighbors demonstrating the care and investment in each other that our region is known for. In the vendor village, participants will find several autism-friendly businesses and resource providers throughout the event and available for questions. Rain or shine, the Spokane community is encouraged to join the fun and help make this the most caring stroll ever! The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the 5k walk/run/roll beginning at noon at the Ice Age Playground.
