Volunteer: Deliver Meals to Seniors at Home with Meals on Wheels GSCMeals on Wheels Greater Spokane County is calling on compassionate individuals to help deliver meals to homebound seniors in Spokane County. With growing demand in all areas, especially within the City of Spokane and northern neighborhoods, we urgently need new volunteers to ensure every senior receives the support they deserve. As a volunteer driver, you'll deliver 10 to 14 meals on a route that typically takes just 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. Most volunteers drive one day a week, but if you have limited availability, we welcome substitute drivers who can fill in as needed. Volunteering with us is about more than delivering meals; it’s about fostering vital social connections that enhance the health and well-being of seniors. Many of our volunteers are retirees eager to give back, college students exploring meaningful community service opportunities, or families who enjoy making memories while spreading joy to seniors. Volunteer: Foster CaregiversWe depend on the kindness, love and homes of our foster parents to help us save hundreds of lives every year. Members of our foster care program open up their homes for shelter animals. They care for kittens or puppies until they are old enough for adoption, animals with illnesses and injuries until they are healed, and animals who need socialization or those who are not thriving in the shelter environment. The time commitment varies upon the needs of the foster pet, but generally is between 2 weeks and 3 months. Fostering is a flexible, fun and rewarding volunteer experience, and requires a special person- able to invest themselves into the lives of foster pets, and let them go knowing they’ve helped save a life. We provide all supplies foster parents need, from food and bedding to medication. While it is best to have some knowledge about animal behavior and health, we always try to match foster parents with animals whose needs are within your ability level, and we provide ongoing help and support throughout your foster experience. If you have your own animals, you’ll want to consider how they will adjust to having a foster pet. Some animals do very well with a temporary friend and can help socialize the foster animal. Other pets have a harder time with new animals being added to or leaving the family. You’re the best judge of your pet’s personality. For the safety of your pets and the foster animal, it’s important to keep your pets up-to-date on vaccinations. In many cases, the foster pet will need to be isolated from your own pets, either temporarily or throughout the foster period. Volunteer: Do You Have a Passion for Senior Rights? Become a Long-Term Care Ombudsman!
The Washington State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is an essential link in our long-term care system that protects and promotes the Resident Rights guaranteed to long-term care residents under federal and state law and regulations. We are currently looking for volunteers who would be interested in serving as advocates for residents in nursing homes, adult family homes, and assisted living facilities that protect their rights and quality of life in these spaces on the ground.
Residents of long-term care facilities sometimes have little or no contact with the outside world. Many feel they lack control over their lives. A friendly volunteer who visits regularly can be a bright spot in an elderly resident's day. Many residents are alone and would be very happy to have your visits. This may also help ensure they get good care if someone from the community is looking in on them regularly.
Each volunteer in Washington State’s volunteer-based Ombudsman Program spends 4+ hours a week in nursing homes, adult family homes, or assisted living facilities working to resolve complaints while advocating for residents. Volunteers serve as advocates on the ground to help preserve the quality of life for residents in the region.
We are looking for volunteers that: Are 18+ years-old Have reliable transportation Have compassion, respect for older persons, and common sense Have a positive attitude and can communicate effectively
You will develop skills in: Communication Listening Relationship Building Confidentiality Complaint Resolution Resident’s Rights
If this sounds like an opportunity you would enjoy, we invite you to apply!

Volunteer: SAN Pantry Food CollectionSAN provides a weekly food pantry for our immunocompromised clients, people living with HIV & AIDS. On a weekly average, we server about 50 clients. We established this program last year after a hiatus and have not been able to get connected with 2nd Harvest due to the current crisis. We work with 2 local non-profits to source food items, but they are even having a hard time getting enough food for their own clients, let alone helping us. At this time, we really always need additional volunteers and access to foods, especially those rich in protein like eggs, chicken breast, oats, milk, greek yogurt, beans, peanut butter, and fresh fruit and vegetables. SAN does have a large chest freezer and access to multiple refrigerators and enough storage to be able to store items. If interested and able to donate food items, please let us know. We are able to take donations at our location with advanced notice since we are not always at the office. All It Takes is One Neighbor is a grassroots volunteer initiative focused on weaving stronger, more connected neighborhoods—one relationship, one gathering, one shared space at a time. As a volunteer, you’ll become a Community Connector, engaging in meaningful weekly activities such as: Supporting or Hosting Local Events – Whether it’s a block party, potluck, or sidewalk chalk day, you’ll help spark joy and togetherness. Weekly Micro-Actions – Each week, do one thing to build connection: meet a new neighbor, plant flowers on your block, or invite someone for coffee.Creating a Neighborhood Asset Map – Help identify the people, places, and passions already in your community. Exploring or Creating “Third Spaces” – Discover and support informal places that help neighbors connect naturally. Natural Mentorship Training – Learn how to support young people in your community in authentic, relational ways. This is not about adding work to your plate—it’s about living with intention where you already are. And you won’t be doing it alone. There will be dedicated spaces for “One Neighbor” volunteers to meet in person, collaborate, exchange ideas, and encourage one another as you grow your impact together.
