Position Summary

Support attendance and engagement efforts across Northeast Washington by working with AmeriCorps Volunteers, school staff, and community partners to strengthen communication, coordination, and engagement activities. This role also supports trainings, professional development, and regional Days of Service events that engage AmeriCorps Volunteers serving in schools and community programs.

Program Description

The NEWESD 101 AmeriCorps program brings together AmeriCorps Volunteers and community partners across Northeast Washington who are working toward a shared goal: improving student attendance and strengthening engagement in schools and communities.

As a Lead Attendance & Engagement Specialist, you will support the coordination, communication, and engagement efforts of the Spokane Service Team to strengthen attendance improvement work and amplify the impact of AmeriCorps service across the region. This role focuses on helping connect people, information, and resources—supporting collaboration among volunteers serving in schools, community partners, and regional stakeholders.

You will work closely with the AmeriCorps Coordinator to support shared learning across the team, assist with regional engagement efforts, and help elevate the stories, practices, and outcomes emerging from service sites. This position is well suited for someone interested in education, youth engagement, communications, and community partnership work, and who is excited to contribute to a broader network focused on student success.

Returning AmeriCorps Volunteers may be considered for additional peer leadership responsibilities and an enhanced living allowance, based on experience, program needs, and funding availability.

Daily Tasks and Responsibilities

Attendance & Reengagement Support

• Organize and share attendance resources, tools, and promising practices with AmeriCorps Volunteers serving in schools, and assist with coordination of regional attendance initiatives such as campaigns and the regional Attendance Task Force.
• Collect and develop stories, photos, and impact data highlighting attendance improvement efforts to communicate lessons learned and program outcomes.

Day of Service Planning & Volunteer Coordination

• Support planning and implementation of National Days of Service, volunteer projects, and community events, including coordination of logistics such as materials, schedules, and participant needs.
• Assist with volunteer and partner engagement efforts, including outreach, recruitment support, participation tracking, and recognition activities.

Communications & Social Media

• Create and share content (social media, flyers, newsletters, announcements) supporting schools in communicating with students, families, and staff about attendance, as well as to highlight AmeriCorps impact.
• Capture and develop stories through photos, videos, interviews, and written narratives to showcase volunteer contributions and community impact.

General AmeriCorps Volunteer Responsibilities

• Participate in required Spokane Service Team trainings, days of service days, and civic engagement projects.
• Complete required program documentation, including timesheets and monthly reports, accurately and on time.
• Share stories and photos from service activities for use in reports, communication materials, and on social media.

Additional Leadership Responsibilities (Returning AmeriCorps Volunteers Only)

• Serve as a peer lead for school-based Attendance & Engagement Specialists.
• Support onboarding and informal coaching of new AmeriCorps Volunteers, and facilitate regular check-ins with Volunteers.
• Support coordination across school districts and community partners under staff direction.

Volunteer Expectations

• Maintain confidentiality & appropriate boundaries with students & families.
• Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to service.
• Engage in ongoing learning about the region’s schools and communities (including historical and current barriers that shape student experiences) to better understand student & family needs, approach interactions without judgment, and reflect on personal bias in service delivery.
• Communicate regularly with supervisor and seek guidance when needed.
• Maintain accurate documentation of service activities and hours.
• Participate fully in required training, meetings, and service projects.

AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old
• U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
• High school diploma/GED or working toward equivalency
• Ability to pass required background checks
• Commitment to required service hours and term length

• Segal Education Award of up to a $7,395 that can be used for future schooling or to pay off existing qualified student loan debt (upon successful completion of the service term, subject to federal tax
• Forbearance (temporarily postponing paying off a loan) of qualified student loans during the service term
• Payment of interest on qualified student loans that accrued during the service term (paid after successful completion of service term)
• Serving in a full-time AmeriCorps position qualifies as "employment" towards the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program
