Volunteer: Blood DonorsWhat do we all have in common that instantly connects us and gives us the power to do more? It’s the blood pulsing within each of us. This amazing, ever-replenishing gift is truly a natural resource that, when shared, speeds healing and provides comfort. Lifesaving blood offers second chances and many tomorrows to those who depend on it. Each year, nearly 5 million Americans need blood transfusions. Blood helps trauma and burn patients, premature infants, heart surgery patients, organ transplant recipients and those fighting cancer, among others. In emergencies, it’s the blood already on hospital shelves that saves lives. Learn more about what makes blood so special. Donating blood is one of the easiest ways to give back to your community. If you’ve never donated blood before, we encourage you to try! We’ll guide you through every step and answer any questions. Here’s what you can expect, eligibility requirements and things you can do ahead of time to make your experience pleasant and rewarding. Donation Process Before you roll up your sleeve to help someone else, please take care of yourself: Eat a healthy, low-fat meal within two hours ahead of your donation. The day before, eat a salty snack. When you donate blood, you lose about a gram of salt. Replacing it ahead of time helps keep your blood pressure normal.

Volunteer: Host A Blood DriveInspiring others to give blood by hosting a blood drive is a rewarding way to benefit your community. It’s also an opportunity to give your organization’s members a chance to share in the wonder of transforming the lives of others. At Vitalant, we have thousands of volunteers we call blood drive coordinators, who partner with us to ensure a safe blood supply is always available for patients who need it. Blood drives can be held at businesses, schools, places of worship, community and civic organizations—anywhere enough people are willing to roll up their sleeves to save lives. In fact, more than half of the blood we collect comes from our mobile blood drive programs. We have just a few basic requirements for successful blood drives*: We ask for a minimum of 30 people who are committed to participate in a blood drive. We will supply you with tools to help you measure the level of interest in your organization. If you would like to learn more about becoming a volunteer blood drive coordinator, please complete our host blood drive form below. Once completed, an email will be sent to a local donor recruitment representative in your area who will contact you within three working days. Join us and, together, we’ll do something amazing to change people’s lives. *If your group doesn't meet these requirements, please reach out to us. We would love to talk about alternative partnership opportunities. https://www.vitalant.org/Resources/Contact-Us.aspx?Form=1 Agency: Vitalant Blood Donation Center Inspiring others to give blood by hosting a blood drive is a rewarding way to benefit your community. Volunteer: Become a Mentor with the U-District Mentoring Program! At U-District Mentoring, we believe that everyone has something to offer as a mentor. It doesn’t take much to greatly impact a child's life. By showing up consistently, for four hours each month, you can help to decrease depression symptoms, increase self confidence, and encourage higher educational goals for your mentee. Forming these relationships and expanding a child’s horizons can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Unlike other mentoring programs, we don’t have a waitlist of children. Instead, we intentionally match the mentor and the child based on interests and experiences. Hoping to be matched with a child that likes to paint or play sports? With the help of school counselors, we work to find that perfect match. The commitment level is easy, even for the busiest of people. You can create the schedule and get to plan each outing! Volunteer: Support Group FacilitatorOur Support Groups provide an invaluable network that caregivers for people with Dementia and Alzheimer's can turn to for advice and encouragement. We recognize that caregiving is impossible alone and our support group facilitators create a place for that important interaction by encouraging conversation and maintaining a positive and caring environment. Our volunteers continuously learn and grow alongside the support group participants while serving a population in need of great support. "I couldn't care for mom alone," said Maria a caregiver "We Latinos are very close, but we also need resources. I want my community to know that there are government resources and community resources that are available to help us. The Alzheimer's Association helped connect us to some things we needed." Support Group Facilitators help us reach more individuals by sharing resources and providing a safe space to discuss the challenges associated with caregiving. We currently have over 80 support groups for caregivers and want to expand our reach by training new volunteers from throughout Washington State. Help provide support and hope to those who work everyday to care for loved ones with Dementia by joining us as a volunteer.

Volunteer: Volunteers and Hosts to House Volunteers NeededVolunteers and hosts to house volunteers are needed to help families in Spokane area affected by this spring’s flooding. Now that waters have finally gone down, the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission are sending flood- experienced Emergency Response Teams (ERT) to help with muck-out, gut-out and mold mitigation. They will need housing and other support for their response teams as well as some strong backs and perhaps pick-up or two to haul furniture. Furniture moving – depending on the client’s storage and space, could be an estimated half to one day effort per household. We’d partner the volunteers with at least one ERT member that has the project scope details. Could involve moving items to a storage space outside the home or moving within the home to a location out of the muck out/spray areas. If needed and willing, furniture movers could also help with furniture recovery through a mold spray outside of the muck out areas. ERTs can teach onsite how to do. Overnight Accommodations – we’re asking ERTs to consider seven day (3 on, one off, 3 on), three day or weekend deployment time frames. General areas of work scope look like the North, South and West county areas. Our teams would be very grateful for any level of accommodation support. ERTs could be asked to deploy within the next week or so. Any local support will help these experienced volunteers bring needed skills, knowledge and work to our area. If you, your organization, church or club could provide either moving or housing assistance, please email me at mabullard@gmail.com with what you have to offer, when you are available, and your contact information within the next few days.
