Home fires and other disasters can occur any time, any place. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you’ll provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery. After your initial training, your shifts will include responding to emergencies within 2 hours, night or day, rain or shine, either on the scene or coordinating remotely to provide immediate compassion and care. With experience and further training you can take on leadership and response coordination roles to have a wider impact. At the same time, you’ll be developing skills that you may choose to apply to larger-scale disaster response efforts with the Red Cross.

Make a Real-Time Impact During Disasters

Disaster Action Team (DAT) Duty Officers are the behind-the-scenes heroes who coordinate local emergency responses as they unfold. From the comfort of your home, you’ll ensure that people affected by disasters receive the care and support they need by dispatching trained volunteers to the scene.

What You’ll Do:

Monitor incoming disaster alerts and assess response needs Dispatch Red Cross volunteers to provide immediate assistance Communicate clearly and calmly with agencies and team members Use Red Cross systems to track and manage response activities

What You’ll Need:

Comfort talking on the phone with new people Ability to learn and use computer applications Strong organizational and multitasking skills Reliable access to a computer, internet, and phone Willingness to complete Red Cross training

American Red Cross Most-Needed Volunteer Opportunities

 

How would you like to help? Here’s a list of typical Red Cross volunteer opportunities: Disaster Services (in person): Volunteers get trained to respond to local and national disasters. In addition, volunteers train people, families, schools and communities to be prepared for emergencies. Service to the Armed Forces (in person/virtual): We need volunteers to work with military veterans in our community as recreation assistants at the Spokane Veterans Home (Tuesday and Friday activities available) or on base at the Red Cross office or MTF. We also have opportunities to support emergency communications for deployed servicemembers. Volunteer Coordination (in person/virtual): Assist with the recruitment and coordination of local volunteers as well as supporting training, engagement and recognition! Multiple opportunities to volunteer from home (virtual): Wide array of opportunities including to screen prospective volunteers, manage a volunteer database and/or training information and credentials, support financial fiscal review procedures, or even be on-call as a disaster dispatch volunteer. Most opportunities need access to phone and computer with internet access.

Share your mental health training with those who need it most. Mental health professionals are needed for the following volunteer opportunities:

Provide disaster mental health services to people impacted by disasters and Red Cross workers during preparedness, response, and recovery; OR Help members of the military, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to, the challenges of military service by facilitating small group workshops.

Requirement: Hold at minimum a Master’s Degree in one of the mental health professions listed below:

Any U.S. state or territory as a social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, or psychiatrist (any level license/registration, including non-clinical licenses such as Licensed Masters Social Worker or LMSW).

When housing is disrupted in communities after a disaster it can be difficult for some people to find new long-term housing. The Shelter Resident Transition Service Associates help shelter residents create personalized plans to overcome roadblocks and transition to sustainable housing solutions. They play a critical role in reducing disaster-caused displacement and aiding in long-term recovery for individuals.

Do you have the flexibility to deploy for two weeks to support communities impacted by disaster? The Red Cross is looking to train willing individuals 18 and older who want to alleviate human suffering by shortening the time of disaster-caused displacement. All training and travel expenses are fully covered by the Red Cross.

The American Red Cross has a special need for support from people who are an RN, LPN, LVN, APRN, NP, EMT, paramedic, MD/DO or PA with an active, current and unencumbered license. RNs supervise all clinical tasks.

Share your healthcare training with those who need it most. Healthcare providers are needed for the following volunteer opportunities:

Provide healthcare services to people impacted by disasters and Red Cross workers during preparedness, response, and recovery (locally or on deployments); OR Participate in chapter preparedness activities, support Disaster Action Team (DAT) responses, shelter operations, emergency aid stations, outreach activities, and recovery planning during a disaster relief operation.

Requirements: Active and unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Practice Nurse, Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathy, Physician Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, Retired RN/LPN/LVN if the state in which the license is granted allows for full scope of practice for the volunteer.
