American Red Cross

Step into action when disaster hits — help set up shelters and serve those in need.

Be there when help can't wait. Join the Red Cross as a Shelter Team volunteer and play a vital role in supporting individuals and families affected by disasters.

Shelter volunteers help ensure that those displaced by emergencies have a safe place to stay, a warm meal, and compassionate support. Whether setting up shelters, distributing supplies, or assisting with meals, your presence brings comfort and stability during uncertain times.

What you’ll do:

Help set up and operate emergency shelters Assist with distributing disaster supplies, beverages, and meals Provide comfort kits and essential items to shelter residents Support clients with empathy and clear communication Contribute to local disaster response — and have the option to deploy nationally if desired and needed

What you’ll need:

Compassion and a desire to help others Strong communication and teamwork skills Willingness to be flexible and responsive during disaster situations

Why It Matters:

When disaster strikes, safe shelter is one of the most urgent needs. Your time and care can help families begin to recover and rebuild. Shelter volunteers are often the first face of hope people see after crisis — and that matters.
