Who We Are
As a volunteer-run nonprofit, we are engaged in a multi-year effort to provide an active, contemporary use for an iconic historic building in downtown Cheney, sharing local and regional history in a dynamic setting. Our 10-member board of directors oversees activities, with help from sub-committees for specific events and hands-on restoration work.
What We Do
The Cheney Depot Society was formed in 2014 to promote the relocation, restoration and re-use of the 1929 Northern Pacific Railway Depot in Cheney. The restored Depot will be occupied by a commercial tenant which will generate foot traffic into the building. Although not a museum, the Depot will contain rotating displays featuring regional and railroad history, and highlighting tourism activities in the region.
We are currently finishing a multi-year rehab project and will open the Depot to the public in early 2026. Volunteer help is still needed for landscaping and site development. We could also use help with social media, creating or editing videos, event planning, and other hands-on projects. As our collection of artifacts continues to grow, we will need to photograph and document donated items and develop a collection database. For volunteers with the right interests & skill sets, we could use help with oral history interviews and helping to design interpretive displays and signage.
